Co-UDlabs at the 8th edition of EURO-SAM workshop in Luleå, Sweden
Many structural infrastructures in Europe have now reached an age that entails a considerable need for rehabilitation and renewal. Sewers and drains are of particular importance in this context, as they account for the largest share of underground infrastructure assets in the European Union (EU-28), with a replacement value of €2.5 trillion, according to a rough calculation by IKT.
About the event
In view of this challenge, scientists from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland met at the 8th edition of the European Sewer Asset Management (EURO-SAM) workshop on 15-16 February 2023 in Luleå (Sweden) to discuss new research approaches and asset management strategies. The focus of this two-day workshop was the monitoring and condition assessment of sewers as well as the detereoration modelling and failure analysis for these constructions. In addition, the overall strategic investment planning and the asset management of blue-green infrastructures were also discussed.
The event was organized by UDAM – Urban Drainage Asset Management, a network that aims to share recent research results and to facilitate collaboration between European researchers.

Our participation
Co-UDlabs partners INSA, IKT and the University of Sheffield were represented at this workshop to promote the Co-UDlabs research project.
Ehsam Kazim from the University of Sheffield presented the status of the work on “A deep learning-based framework for automated detection of in-pipe defects in CCTV sewer surveys” as part of the Co-UDlabs work package on “Asset deterioration”. “Condition assessment and modelling” was the topic of Thomas Brüggemann, with a focus on current research projects of the IKT. In this context he presented the possibility of participating in Co-UDlabs via Transnational Access. This met great interest among the 23 attendes of the event, which also included the Swedish sewer network operators.
